The Inspector-General of Water Compliance is an integrity agency and independent regulator for the Murray-Darling Basin. The Inspector-General of Water Compliance has oversight and compliance powers in Basin water management under the Water Act 2007 (Cth).

The Inspector-General of Water Compliance holds Basin governments and agencies to account in meeting their obligations under the Basin Plan 2012. This includes the Commonwealth as well as State and Territory governments of:

  • Queensland
  • New South Wales
  • the Australian Capital Territory
  • Victoria
  • South Australia

The Inspector-General of Water Compliance has a variety of roles across the agency. Its headquarters is in Canberra. Its regional offices serve as bases for field officers, who act as the "eyes and ears" in engaging with communities throughout the Basin. They are located in:

  • Goondiwindi (Queensland)
  • Dubbo (New South Wales)
  • Albury (News South Wales)
  • Mildura (Victoria).
