The Inspector-General of Water Compliance provides insights on water management to:
- Murray-Darling Basin governments and agencies
- relevant projects in the Basin
- other inquiries in the Basin.
These submissions by the Inspector-General help to ensure that:
- the Basin Plan 2012 is effective
- Basin water management is legal and transparent.

The Inspector-General made a submission to the independent review of its powers. The Australian Government announced the Review of Murray-Darling Water Compliance on 14 September 2023. The review provided a timely opportunity to reflect on:
- the nature of the Inspector-General of Water Compliance
- what the Inspector-General of Water Compliance was set up to do
- whether current arrangements met delivery of this intention.

Productivity Commission inquiry into Basin Plan implementation
August 2023
Under the Water Act 2007 (Cth) (the Water Act), the Productivity Commission(Opens in a new tab/window) must make an inquiry every 5 years. The inquiry looks at the effectiveness of the Basin Plan and water resource plans in action. This was the Commission's second such inquiry.

The State Development and Regional Industries Committee(Opens in a new tab/window) invited an Inspector-General of Water Compliance submission. The inquiry was regarding the Water Legislation Amendment Bill 2022 (QLD). The Bill had impacts for:
- managing water resources in the Queensland region of the Basin
- Basin water resources under other, connected Basin State governments and agencies
